BOTANICAL PROFILE PHILIPPINE FIELD GUIDE

Arrowhead vine.

Syngonium podophyllum · Araceae

Juvenile leaves are arrow-shaped; climbing mature growth can develop very different leaf shapes.

PLACE

Bright shade or filtered indoor light is a useful starting location; shield it from sudden intense sun.

GROWING MEDIUM

Maintain an airy, draining root zone and assess moisture before adding more water.

RECOGNITION

Recognise the plant.

Leaf shape changes with maturity; variegated nursery selections are not reliable evidence of a different species.

Individual cultivated varieties may differ from the documented specimen. If a nursery's common name is ambiguous, compare botanical features or obtain the exact scientific name before relying on a care profile.

FIND A PLACE

Start with the light.

Bright shade or filtered indoor light is a useful starting location; shield it from sudden intense sun.

Observe the actual position rather than deciding from the compass direction alone. Note when sunlight lands on the leaves, whether a roof or nearby building filters sky light, and if the spot changes during a cloudy or wet period. Use the plant placement worksheet to keep those observations together.

THE ROUTINE

Watch, then water.

Maintain an airy, draining root zone and assess moisture before adding more water.

Notice whether a change in leaf form reflects maturity rather than a new problem.

Grow compact with trimming or give it a support to climb, depending on available room.

What works in one pot will not necessarily transfer to another. See why fixed watering calendars fail and our container guide.

IN THE PHILIPPINES

Account for the room.

Sheltered balconies may be usable, but direct afternoon exposure or constant rain require separate assessment.

Actual rain, shade, ventilation and air-conditioning matter more than assuming that every Philippine home has one humidity or watering schedule. If moving a plant between indoor shade and an outdoor position, increase exposure gradually and keep inspecting the root zone.

A safety note. NC State lists medium-severity ingestion toxicity; do not place within easy reach of pets or children.
