LEAFY / THE SUPPLY DESKBuy for the setup.
Start with the problem, not a product listing. The right purchase depends on the plant, the place and what your existing equipment already solves.
CONTAINERSCan excess water leave?
Check for an actual drainage hole. A decorative cover can hold a nursery pot, but the water collected inside still needs to be removed. Consider a saucer to protect furniture without leaving roots standing in water.
Before buying: measure the existing root ball, pot opening, stability and whether you have a safe way to empty runoff.
Understand drainage ↗GROWING MEDIAWhat is the medium supposed to do?
Water retention, aeration and stability differ between mixes. Check ingredients and suitability for the plant instead of assuming one product works for every species. Adding a coarse ingredient does not fix a sealed, non-draining container.
Before buying: note the plant's existing substrate, pot size and how long its current medium stays wet.
Read the moisture guide ↗SUPPORTSIs it a climbing plant?
A climbing Monstera or pothos may benefit from a sturdy support. Check pot weight, anchor method and expected height instead of assuming a light ornamental stake will hold mature growth.
Before buying: measure available height and choose a support that cannot tip over.
Compare growth habits ↗LIGHT & MEASUREMENTIs insufficient light demonstrated?
First record what reaches the plant at different times. A lux meter can compare visible illuminance; a horticultural quantum sensor measures plant-relevant photon flux. Do not buy a grow light using nominal watts as a proxy for light delivered at the leaves.
Before buying: verify the product's actual output data, coverage at an indicated distance, electrical safety and whether heat can be managed. Do not infer verified performance from a retailer title.
